Wipe Data from a Stolen Smart Phone
Using Outlook Web Access to Erase Sensitive Information
If your phone is synchronized with one of the University’s Exchange servers (How-to: iPhone; all others) and your phone is ever lost or stolen, you can quickly erase all stored data — including email, contacts, calendar, photos, web history, applications, and everything else. The device must be turned on and have an active Internet connection, so if your phone is lost, act quickly!
Follow these simple instructions and all data stored on the phone will be erased:
- Log in to Outlook Web Access, the website to read your email.
Medical campus employees should visit http://mail.med.miami.edu. Other areas of the University have their own implementations with their own web mail addresses, but will likely also offer this feature.
Click the Options link in the top right corner.
Then, click the Mobie Devices option in the left-hand menu.
You should now see your device listed. Select the device and click Wipe All Data from Device… Note: Do not choose the option to Remove Device from List; doing so will prevent you from wiping its data.
Confirm on the dialog box that you intend to wipe the device by clicking OK.
When the device next accesses your mail, it will enter its secure wipe mode. Depending on the device, this may take just a minute or two, or it could take a matter of hours.
Check this screen in Outlook Web Access regularly until the device status changes to Wipe Successful. Now, you can remove the device from the list.
If your phone does not wipe successfully, please contact your IT support group.
